Chris was up bright and early. It had come at long
last. It was finally the Winter Solstice. It was only
the most important day of the entire year. Not to say that
the summer solstice wasn't as good a day, but it seemed to lack
that festiveness that the closeness of the end of year provided.
Not to mention that everyone else had their holidays around
the same time and not many fell in the summer. Chris felt
more strongly about the Winter Solstice personally. He liked
the bracing cold of the wind, and the fresh snow on the ground.
He rubbed his hands together and headed out for the nexus.
They had driven quite a while after dark the night before
to get there.
About half way to the edge of the nexus a voice called out
to Chris. He half turned and readied his pistol. A
short distance behind him was a familiar figure. Chris came
to a halt and waited for Bronson James, the Ley Line Walker from
the Second String under Max's command, to catch up to him.
Bronson was wearing a dark green robe with drop
sleeves--Wendy taught him that term. The edges of the robe
were inscribed with intricate symbols in gold. He had the
cowl pushed back and the light of the ley-line illuminated his
dark skin giving it a heavy blue cast. Chris looked at his
own robe. He couldn't see it now but its blue colour was
starting to fade. It was only half as blue as it had been
when it was new.
