was set in the wall a foot off of the ground. There was no porch or even any kind
of overhang over the door.
Max reached out to knock on the door and Chris laid a hand
on his shoulder and pointed past him. There was a button
next to the door glowing with an electric light. Max pressed
it carefully once and then waited. It was almost a minute
before he reached out to try again and a voice stopped him short.
"I hear ya out there. Hold on a min. and I'll let you
in."
There was a clattering behind the door and then it opened.
Standing there was a man with grey hair and small round
rimmed glasses perched on his nose. He spoke in a low voice
that held just the slightest hint of a crack. "What can I
help you gentlemen with?"
Max answered him choosing his words, "Sir, we've heard
certain rumours about a couple of scholars who have, how shall I
say this..."
"Oh you're here about that. Hold on gent. <He
turned and shouted back into the house.> Ma, there's
some more about the rumours."
A female voice came echoing from within the house.
"Alright, show them in if there aren't too many of them."
The man turned and looked at the motley crew in front of
him. Max was holding his camouflage hat in his hands almost
wringing it, his arm making a nervous whining sound. Rad
stood behind him, a friendly but controlling arm around R.C.
Behind them stood Chris with his mask hanging loose from
his face
